Testimony of Wanda Reed, Interpreter
Wanda Reed, interpreter to the deaf at FBC, says this ministry is God's calling in her life. It all began in another church about ten years ago when a family of six visited the church. It was difficult to keep the children still as there was no program for them to learn on their level. After about four weeks they quit coming, and they said it was no use trying.
"Several of us asked to be taught sign language, about 30 or so began, but only three of us became interpreters in the services. Twice God gave me a literal vision of the demise of many deaf people who have no way of knowing He loves them and that He died for them. Who will care enough to learn their language and show them the love of Jesus?"
"I will, I said, not knowing what all would be required of me, how far from my home and family I'd have to go, nor how many other trials and hardships would cross my way. There are many people who know more and can sign better than I. Where are they? God did not call them here, He called me. He has given me a great love for the deaf people, that their need for a Savior is utmost in my mind and heart. Have you ever noticed how God usually uses the people who are willing to follow and obey? We are usually not the best or most suited for the position. But we love the Lord and we love people. We often feel like we are failures when things are not going as we or others think they should, and we often feel unworthy when things are going well and we see God's blessing."
"We have three of
my students helping in the services now, soon a fourth will
join us. Jill Sanzone and Sunnie Cummings have been
interpreting in our services for a year or so. More
recently, Naomi Maxwell has begun to help in the music
service. Jeri Cornelius is working very hard and will soon
be interpreting some of the songs as well."
The next Beginning Sign Language Class is scheduled to begin March 6, 2007. For Information about classes please call Wanda Reed @ 417.336.0383.
